On a beautiful Thursday evening, the North boys soccer team took the short trip across town to take on their other Coppell rivals- the East Broncos. No matter the sport, this matchup is always one to be circled on the calendar, and both sides were amped up for these matches!
As usual, the A teams took to the pitch first to jump start the action. You could feel the energy in the stadium with both the Cougars and the Broncos looking to strike first. And it didn't take too long as East was able to send a sneaky ball through the box, past the keeper, and into the net for an early advantage. However, North would answer back quickly to reverse the momentum. Coming off the bench, Liam Dow was a bright spark from his midfield wing position; quickly assisting on North's first goal scored by striker Diego Cuberos to even the tally. Shortly thereafter, Dow also earned the secondary assist on a well placed ball that was then sent into the box by Sergio Exposito Perez for another goal struck by Cuberos. And with that, the Cougars jumped back in front and held a 2-1 advantage at the half. In the second half, North kept up the pressure in the midfield and limited the Broncos' chances of finding an equalizer. Robert Bundia also entered the game in goal for the Cougars and immediately made his presence known with several tough stops to stymy the East attack. And Dow wasn't finished yet as he was able to draw a foul in the box; giving Cuberos the chance to earn a Hat Trick with his 3rd goal from the penalty spot. That goal finished off the scoring as North took down the Broncos by a final of 3-1 to earn bragging rights for this season.
For the second game, the Cougars came out looking to extend their undefeated season at the Broncos' expense. Applying the same defensive pressure as North had in the A game, the B team was very successful in limiting scoring chances for East and looked to keep the action on their end of the field. Displaying an array of speed and skills, the Cougars were led offensively by John Ortiz who was able to secure a Hat Trick of his own to boost North's advantage to 3-1. A final tally that was sent in by Juan Murcia finished off the scoring while strong keeper play from Matthew De Santiago led to a 4-1 victory for North... sweeping their rivals and also earning bragging rights. And more importantly, the WIN also secured a District Championship for the Cougars in the B division!
North will wrap up the regular season schedule next week as the A team continues to improve their position in the district standings and the B team looks to complete their undefeated season. Come out and cheer the Cougars on and see what they can do!
