On Monday evening, the CMS North 7th grade Cougars kicked off their football season; taking on the Wolves from Cross Timbers Middle School. As the busses headed West, the anticipation was high and the boys brought the energy!
In the first game of the night, both A teams took the field. Matching up against each other, both teams were looking to strike first. As it turns out, North QB Rylan Horn ended up finding TE Crosby Grizzle in the end zone to put the Cougars on top 6-0. From there, the offense proved tough sledding for both teams as they headed into the fourth quarter tied up at 6-6. A sequence of 3 plays: consecutive SACKS by Diego Rodriguez, Grizzle, and Jayden Harris were able to get North the ball back late in the game in prime position to find the winning score. And a 5 yard TD run by Hector Martinez with an extra point scored by Horn put the Cougars on top... securing a hard-fought victory over the Wolves by a final score of 13-6.
Following this exciting start, the B teams were also amped up and ready to play. Unfortunately for the Cougars, it didn't take long for Cross Timbers to rip down the field and score first. Headed into the half, North was still trailing 6-0 despite having been able to move the ball down the field efficiently. In the second half, North proved up to the challenge as they tied up the game 6-6 on a long TD run down the left sideline by Max Hentschel. Despite allowing the Wolves to answer back almost immediately, the Cougars didn't wilt and again proved that their offense was up to the task. QB Miguel Lopez-Vergara was accurate through the air leading his team without an incompletion; capping off the drive with a TD pass to Samuel Macaluso. And when Chris Angel ran in the extra point try, North took their first lead of the game at 13-12. Stingy defensive play stopped the Wolves in their last attempt to find an answer and the Cougar offense was able to run out the clock and seal the win to help North to a sweep on the night!
