On Tuesday night, the North 8th Grade football team took to the road for their first contest away from home as they traveled to Colleyville Middle School. The Cougars were well aware that the Colts would be a tough opponent; especially defending their home field. And as both games demonstrated, it was a battle throughout.
In the A game, North stepped up first as Garrison Gamet took a keeper around the end to gallop all the way to the end zone giving North the early 6-0 lead. As the first quarter wrapped and throughout the second, both sides played tough defense to limit their opponent's opportunities. And the game remained 6-0 at the half. In the third period, the Colts found a way and punched the ball across for a touchdown which tied the score at 6-6 heading to the final quarter. Needing a spark, North lit the fuse with a massive 62 yard touchdown pass from Gamet to Sergio Exposito Perez to jump back in front and fire up the North fans! An extra point kick by Diego Cuberos added 2 more to secure the 14-6 victory for the Cougars as they advanced to 2-1 on the season.
With the B game up next, both sides wanted to carry over some momentum from the first contest. And once again, North was able to capitalize with the run game and another QB keeper by Gautham Muresh to give North the early energy. Strong running by both Muresh and tailback Marco Ramos continued to keep North's offense moving down the field as play entered the second quarter. But it was a 50 yard TD pass from quarterback Jackson Dunagan to Caleb Ponsen that finally broke the seal. An extra point run by Ramos gave the Cougars an early 7-0 lead. After the North defense was able to get the ball back, North marched down the fiedl again and scored another touchdown on a 12 yard run from Ramos; with an extra point dive by AJ Guillen pushing the lead to 14-0! However, the Colts did not want to go quietly and were able to hit on a long touchdown pass of their own to stay in the game with a halftime score of 14-6 North.
The second half would end up proving to be just as entertaining. In the 3rd quarter, Muresh once again put his legs to work and dove into the end zone on a 5 yard TD run to extend the Cougars' lead. And later on in the 4th, Ramos scored once again on a 20 yard sprint to extend the advantage to 26-6. But just as before, Colleyville did not want to quit... and once again hit on a long pass over the top to score and cut the deficit to 26-12. After the Cougar defense make another big defensive stand late in the game, it was Muresh once again on a QB keeper to swing around the outside and take off on a 98 yard TD explosion that sealed the deal in North's favor; sweeping the Colts with a B team final of 32-12! And if that wasn't enough, Soren Mehta truly nailed the coffin shut with a final interception to end the game on defense.
It was definitely an exciting evening for the Cougars and their fans! Now North looks to keep up the effort against Heritage Middle School next week!
