On Tuesday evening, the North Cougars hosted the Broncos from Heritage Middle School at Buddy Echols Stadium for the District Championship game. After North took last week's regular season finale, everyone was aware of what a battle this would be!
Jumping right in, both the Broncos and the Cougars were feeling each other out during the first quarter... and neither side could find an advantage to get on top. But as play continued in the second quarter, the Broncos were able to punch it in first and take a 8-0 lead. With the clock winding down headed to the half, the Cougars found themselves on the doorstep with a chance to knot it all up, but couldn't convert before the half expired. In the third quarter though, the North defense stood tall. Beginning with a blocked punt, linebacker Gage Burton was able to recover and give North a great chance to score. However, the Bronco defense also stood tall as both sides kept holding the other out of the end zone. Finally, North QB Rylan Horn was able to complete a long pass down the middle to receiver Shane Tetteh to give the Cougars some momentum. Then Horn connected with wideout Darran Perry to find the TD! After the extra point kick from Diego Rodriguez Parada, the game was reset at 8-8 heading into the final quarter. Even with the Cougar defense continuing to play well and find ways to stop Heritage, it was the Broncos who found their way to score once again and jump back on top with just over 3 minutes to play. North's offense was ready to take the field and find a way to match this score, but an unfortunate fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave possession back to the Broncos. And with that stroke of luck, Heritage was able to control the clock and secure the championship win by a score of 16-8.
North would like to acknowledge all of their family, friends, and fans from this season for their energy and support during the games. It definitely helps fuel the fire and ignites the play on the field, so thank you once again!
