Cougar Basketball sweeps West

The Lady Cougars played their first crosstown match-up this past Thursday against the West Wranglers. The night ended with a 6 game sweep for the 7th and 8th grade North basketball programs.

7th grade A team secured the win with a 57-16 final score. North kicked off the game with an effective full court press and excelled in their press break options. Aneesha Anand contributed 14 points and leveraged her impressive speed to create multiple turnovers for the Wranglers. While the Cougars stayed in foul trouble most of the game with 21 team fouls, the tradeoff was playing their most aggressive and unified team of the season. Player of the game is awarded to Olly Anene for being the high scorer with 22 points, leading the team steals and greatly impacting offensively as the point guard.

7th grade B team also walked away with a win and overall score 25-8. With a small 8 man roster due to unforeseen events, the Cougars were forced to diversify their team roles. Shoutout to Abby Behr for alternating between a guard and a post in the second half. She walked away with 7 points and even hit a 3 pointer in the 3rd quarter. Arianna Datta was the team’s high scorer with 8 points. Gaby Keating is B team’s player of the game. She excelled in owning the paint, rebounding, keeping the ball high and putting the ball back up.

7th grade C team wrapped the winning streak up with a 27-8 victory. While the team has a deep roster, all 15 athletes are so cooperative with each other on and off the court and make every minute on the floor count. One of the greatest highlights of the game came in the final 5 seconds of the 3rd quarter. With the ball being thrown in by North under West’s basket and a full court press on the Cougars, a quick play was thrown at the girls to secure a final second basket. Parmis Farzad threw a Hail Mary ball to Renata Lara Velasquez who sprinted the length of the court and hit a buzzer beater basket. Player of the game is awarded to 2 players: Dany Pease, for her willingness to fill in on an unexpected injury, being high scorer with 8 points and her constant heart and hustle while on the court, as well as Sarah Wells, who contributed 2 baskets, countless rebounds, and showed immeasurable improvement in her game play.

8th grade B team played very well last night continuing their 2-0 record winning 40-6. Averie Gonzales came out strong on offense and defense scoring 8 points, 2 rebounds , and 7 steals. Brennan Ford came out strong scoring 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 steal. The Player of the game had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. She works so hard everyday in practice and we’re seeing so much improvement and confidence in her. Congratulations Alexa Boudreaux!!

8th grade A secured the win 41-11. Their focus was on executing their offense and rebounding .Emily Miessner played a great game scoring 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal. Avery James scored 6 points, and 2 rebounds. Player of the Game was Addison Hamm. She was a leader on the court and unselfish play helped the team run their plays successfully. Addison had 4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 assist.
8th grade C showed their most aggressive play to date. They ran plays, focuses on rebounding and showed a lot of improvements winning 23-2. Shreya Shah had 8 points, 2 rebounds and 5 steals.
