On Thursday evening, eager to kick start the long holiday weekend, the North Boys soccer teams had a little business to take care of first... and headed to Heritage Middle School to take on the Broncos in a district match up. Coming off two close losses to start the season, North knew this was the perfect time to turn things around and get some momentum headed into the second half of the schedule. And the Cougars did not disappoint!
In the first match up, the A teams took to the pitch to start off the competition. North again was looking to apply early pressure, find a few goals, and build up a lead. Using the wind advantage, the Cougars definitely were able to push the action; however they saw many close misses tantalizing fly just past the goal. Finally, Diego Cuberos broke the seal, knocking the first goal of the match into the back of the net and giving North the 1-0 lead as they headed to halftime. The boys knew they had outplayed the Broncos, but now would hand the wind advantage back to the other side for the second half. But the Cougars didn't back down, and despite playing into the wind, continued to press forward and truly kept Heritage on their heels. In a quick burst of scoring, the Cougars added 4 more goals to open up the game; including 2 scores from Ryan Snelling, another from Cuberos, and the final tally from Sergio Exposito Perez. Even though the back line helped keep things clean, both of the Cougar keepers, Carter Smith and Robert Bundia, didn't allow anything to scare the goal for the Broncos as North finished off the 5-0 smashing victory!
Rolling into the second game with the B teams, North was looking to continue their early season success against the Broncos. And it didn't take long to announce their presence as John Ortiz opened up the scoring with a bullet of a goal just 30 seconds into the match for the 1-0 advantage. And as the game would go, that would have been enough. Ortiz did add another goal for his second of the night along with scores from Aiden Gambrell and Juan Murcia to push the Cougar total to 4. Keepers Matthew De Santiago and Ashwath Kolla had to work hard in this contest... that is, they had to work hard to stay awake as the North defense rarely ever let the ball cross the midfield line. But a shut out is a shut out... and an easy way to secure a victory to help keep the Cougar B squad undefeated on the year while outpacing their opponents 18-1 through the first half of the season.
Looking ahead, North will face their 2 crosstown rivals over the next few weeks. Come on out and help cheer on the Cougars!
