North Cougars Claim City Championship with 2–0 Win Over East Broncos
In a highly anticipated matchup between the top two teams in the standings, the Coppell Middle School North Cougars faced off against the East Broncos on Friday, May 1st. Both teams entered the contest tied with 9 points, but it was the Cougars who rose to the occasion, securing a 2–0 victory and earning the title of City Champions.
The game opened with intensity as both teams battled for control early. North broke through at the 13-minute mark when Juan Murcia (11) sent a perfectly placed ball into the box, finding Diego Cuberos (17), who finished with a strong header to give the Cougars a 1–0 lead.
Defensively, North held firm. Emiliano Salas and Oscar Martin made several quick smart plays to send the ball to other side of the pitch. With seven minutes remaining in the first half, goalkeeper Brooks Ford (GK) made a diving save to deny the Broncos and preserve the Cougars’ lead heading into halftime.
The Cougars wasted no time adding to their advantage in the second half. Just three minutes in, Sergio Exposito Perez (33) found the back of the net, extending the lead to 2–0. Moments later, goalkeeper Crosby Grizzle (GK) showcased his athleticism, rising high to confidently snatch a ball out of the air and shut down a potential scoring chance.
From there, North maintained control, combining strong defensive organization with disciplined midfield play to close out the match. Contributions across the roster helped secure the shutout and cap off an impressive team performance. Santiago Zurita came in for Graham Burgess and made several big effort plays to gain possession for North.
With the win, the North Cougars finish atop the standings and take home the City Championship. The team now turns its focus to the next challenge as they prepare to face Heritage Middle School.
North Cougars B Team Battles to 1–1 Draw Against East Broncos
The Coppell Middle School North B Team Cougars faced off against the East Broncos in a competitive matchup that ended in a 1–1 draw. Both teams showed determination throughout, with momentum shifting back and forth across both halves.
At the 15-minute mark of the first half, the East Broncos struck first with a well-placed cross into the box that was finished with a high shot into the corner, just out of reach of the Cougars’ keeper. Despite the early setback, North responded with strong effort and created several opportunities before halftime but was unable to find the equalizer.
The second half featured constant changes in possession, with both teams battling in the midfield and looking for openings. The Cougars broke through when Austin Shelby (15) delivered a well-timed through ball to Aaron Swonke (14), who finished quickly to tie the game at 1–1.
Defensively, North stayed organized and resilient, with key contributions from the back line and goalkeepers Keating (GK) and Rodriguez (GK) helping keep the Broncos from adding another goal.
Players across the roster—including Angel (2), Dow (3), Sapkota (4), Sanchez (5), Bista (6), Boucher (7), Muresh (8), Bennet (9), Desai (10), N. Campbell (12), C. Rose (16), Ortega (17), Marks (27), Martinez (20), Mata Bruzal (19), and J. Rose (19)—contributed to a strong team effort, showing growth, hustle, and improved communication throughout the match.
The Cougars continued to push for a late winner, but both teams held firm, ending the game in a hard-fought 1–1 draw. The result reflects the team’s persistence and progress as they continue to develop and compete.
