On Tuesday evening, the North 8th grade football team visited Colleyville Middle School in a showdown of two teams both eyeing a district championship this season. And in the end, the game action lived up to the hype!
Starting off with the A game, it was clear that both the Cougars and the Colts were aware of the significance of this contest. And as both teams looked to get a feel for the action, the first quarter passed by without any scoring. However, it was the Colts who broke through first midway through the second quarter; connecting on a TD pass and adding the 2 point kick to go up 8-0. Despite being behind, the North offense still struggled to find its footing in this back and forth game. However, just before halftime, North got the break they had been looking for. Following a Colleyville punt, Cougar returner Darran Perry picked up a bouncing ball, shed a few Colts, and sped down the sideline to find the end zone. With the successful 2 point kick by Diego Rodriguez Parada, the game was back to an even 8-8 at the break. In the second half, North's play was highlighted by several defensive plays. The first was a blocked Colts punt by Wyatt Synowicki which was recovered by Hector Martinez to put North in great field possession. Capitalizing upon this, QB Rylan Horn threw a quick pass out to Perry who once again was able to make his way all the way down the field for a 30 yard touchdown reception. Rodriguez Parada once again made the kick and North was finally on top by a score of 16-8. But locking down this win would not be easy, and it was the Cougar defense as mentioned before that stood tall. First, Cougar safety Leo Popp made an interception on 4th down to stop a Colleyville drive. And later, effectively ending the Colts' chances, it was North's cornerback ,Viaan Desai, knocking down a 4th down pass to turn the ball over and save a chunk of field position for the Cougars. And with that, it was North who celebrated watching the clock run out to confirm this massive district WIN over a very tough opponent!
In the nightcap, both B squads also looked to find a victory to wrap up the evening. Unfortunately for North, it was the Colts who jumped out early; using long passes to get down field and strong runs to punch the ball into the end zone to be up 13-0 at the half. The challenge got even tougher as Colleyville was able to run back the kickoff to start the second half to stretch their lead to 21-0. However, North found out that they can play that game as well when returner Max Hentschel then returned his kick all the way for a TD to get North on the board; now down 21-6. After holding the Colts, North used a long run by Preston Boucher to find themselves in a first and goal situation as they looked to climb back into this contest. But the Collleyville defense dug in and were able to keep North from scoring. The Colts were able to convert later with another TD run after recovering a Cougar fumble to push the score to 27-6. And despite some gutsy play by North QB Jackson Greene, the Cougars were not able to pull off the comeback and fell for their first loss of the season.
