On Monday evening, the North Cougars returned from a bye week to take on their other crosstown rivals- the Wranglers from Coppell Middle School West. It was a beautiful evening to play and both teams were amped up for the opportunity.
In the A game to start the action, North was able to quickly jump out in front. Kotaro Matsumoto took off around the left end... and there wasn't anyone to catch him as he scored from 60 yards out. Lucas Cuberos added the extra point kick to put North up 8-0. Following the kickoff, on West's first play, it was Cuberos again who jumped in front of a pass and picked it off; returning it for a Pick 6 TD to increase North's lead to 14-0. North continued the push through the second quarter; eating up the clock with nice plays such as a long completion from Nolan Wright to wideout Max Myers. However, the Wranglers were able to force a stop and stay in the game. With the clock winding down before the half, the Cougars were able to capitalize on another great pass from Wright to tight end Caleb Camacho for a TD; pushing North's lead to 20-0 at the break. And Camacho wasn't done... as he took the opening kickoff in the second half all the way to the house for another TD to expand the Cougar lead to 26-0. And in the 4th quarter, it was Nelson Ogbolugo who was able to intercept West once again to get the ball back for North. And with Lucas Cuberos now playing quarterback, the Cougars pushed the ball down the field and capitalized when Cuberos crossed the line on a QB draw up the middle to cement the 32-0 win for North!
With the B game to follow, the Cougars were hungry for a sweep of their rivals on the night. And for North, this game turned into a showcase for Haruki Imai! Imai scored twice on nice runs as the running back to give North a 12-0 lead at the break. And he also returned a fumble late in the game for another TD. However, running back Isaac Stanback was also a part of the action on offense as he made some nice plays and also scored a touchdown from 25 yards out. Bolstered by great defensive plays, the Cougars held West at bay with a fumble recovery by Levi Lujan and another forced fumble by Jackson Ketcherside. In the end, it all added up to a solid 24-0 shoutout victory for North and a sweep over West on the night.
