On Tuesday evening, the North Cougars once again hosted a CISD rival at Buddy Echols Stadium- this time the Wranglers from Coppell Middle School West. This would prove to be the final matchup between Coppell middle school programs for the season, and both teams were looking to earn bragging rights over their future teammates!
Starting off, the A teams took to the field. And the Cougars quickly jumped out in front behind a strong TD run run by half back Aaron Dominguez. Diego Rodriguez Parada added the extra point kick to set the score at 8-0. North continued to build upon their lead in the second quarter as QB Rylan Horn connected on a long pass over the top to Shane Tetteh to push the score to 14-0. And after a switch at QB, it was Miguel Lopez-Vergara throwing down field to Darran Perry for another TD! Following the kick from Rodriguez Parada, it was now 22-0 Cougars on top. Despite a kickoff recovery by Hector Martinez, North wasn't able to capitalize and took their lead into the half. In the 3rd quarter, North was moving the ball behind some strong running from QB Horn. But in the end, it was running back Kael Burgin punching in the score along with another PAT from Rodriguez Parada to push the score to 30-0. On the Wranglers next possession, it was the Cougars again finding a way to score as defensive end Wyatt Synowicki literally stripped the ball away from the West quarterback, spun around, and showed off his speed as he streaked to the end zone for a surprise score! Adding the kick from Rodriguez Parada, North was nailing down the coffin by a score of 38-0. Despite another strip sack from Synowicki on the next possession, North wasn't able to add any more points while the clock quickly ticked away and ended up sealing the huge WIN to start off the night!
Now it was time for the B games to begin! And once again, North quickly got to work. Running back Chris Angel took the first carry around the end for a 40 yard TD. Then, QB Jackson Greene hit tight end Gavin Fischer out in the corner to add the extra point- putting the Cougars on top 7-0. Next, the North Defense stepped up to get a take away as Sebastian Bello-Lopez recovered a Wrangler fumble to give the Cougars the ball back. And it was QB Greene on a keeper around the left end for the score; along with the following extra point try to put North up 14-0. And still in the first quarter, North once again took advantage of a strong running game when Angel once again scampered through the Wranglers defense to score from 40 yards out. This time, Greene hit Sammy Macaluso in the end zone for the extra point and a commanding 21-0 lead. However, that hot first quarter then saw the action slow way down as West kept possession the entire second quarter, but wasn't able to put any points on the board. In the second half, North once again moved the ball down the field, this time with new QB Andrew Espinoza sneaking the ball into the end zone. And the Cougars trotted out the PAT kicking unit for a chance, and saw kicker Preston Boucher punch the kick through the uprights to push the advantage to 29-0. And as the clock wound down, that would end up being the final with North sweeping the night and locking up bragging rights over their West rivals.
