North Girls Coaches | 2/2/2024

North played Grapevine Middle School Ponies on Thursday night. The games were in full swing at the Coppell Middle School North gymnasium.
The A team played first with a newcomer Kate Kingsford. The cougars were off to a quick 6-point lead in the first minute of the game. Buckets were made by Izzy Lingenbrink and four points by Olly Anene. Kate jumped in for another basket to end the first half 8-5, North. The Ponies had a breakthrough and went to the free-throw line six times making 65% from the line. The cougars battled the next quarter to share the load of slowing their point guard to four points. The cougars worked hard to share defensive efforts by Anisha Anand and Jaehee Lee. The fourth quarter the cougars help the best player to only three points. This was the only three points they scored, unfortunately the ponies led the game 24-20 ending score. Players of the game were Olly Anene and Jaehee Lee for their continued effort and positive impact on the game.

The “B Babies” were next. The title does not fit these fierce ladies; they are on fire. They came out with press to also jump up on the GMS ponies. The first quarter score was 10-2 with sharing the wealth between Tarusi Aphale (4), Pamela Brown, Gaby Keating, and Charlotte Baade with two each. The second quarter it was more evenly matched on the scoreboard with North scoring four and GMS with two points. The game at was 14 to 4, Coppell.
And that was as close as the game was going to get. The B babies then took it to a whole new level outscoring the ponies by 11 points. The three pointer hit by Abby Behr was noted. Charlotte went to the foul line twice and the utility player Sienna Peteriet scored 6 for the half matching, her “player of the game” partner, Finley Sanders-Burk with also six points. Ariana Datta made a bucket also to send the cougars to a win with the final score of 32-5.

Sonic drink time? What?
The cute little manipulative C team little girls tricked Coach Martens into buying them a sonic drink at the completion of this game. The suggestion came from one red headed advocate, no names mentioned (cough cough) …. that if the opposing team did not score a point then Coach Money bags, I mean Martens would buy them a sonic drink. Cha Ching! These hustling girls did the work. They dominated the whole the game. All 15 girls whirled their way to the win. First quarter the cougars scored 6 points, Meadow Aycock, Layla Lampkin, Awa Ouedraogo each scored a goal. Second quarter scorers were Nidhi Veda, Renata Lara-Velazquez, Sanvi Porumalla, and London Lock for a bucket each making the the half time score 14- to-- well you know zero.
The next two quarters we scored 11 more points, Madison Tooke with a shot for two points, Layla Lampkin hit another for a total of 4 points. Sarah Wells rocked the line by hitting two free throws, while Dany Pease scored a bucket and a free throw and Awa scored 4 more points. The players of the game were Dany, Awa and Sarah for their contribution to the shut-out game. It may only be a baseball term, but we like it! I’ll have a blue raspberry with nerds Coach.

On Thursday, our 8th grade girls had their last home basketball game for the season. All teams finished with a sweep against The Ponies!!

B TEAM

The B team was challenged to run a new offensive due to the Ponies, running a zone defense. It was a low scoring game, but they fought through adversity and came out with the win, 14-11. The first quarter was a little rocky, adjusting to the new plays. We fell short by 1 point, but tied up the score by halftime 8-8, thanks to Averie Gonzales, who brought in 4 crucial points along with Brennan Ford with 2. There was a lot of action in the third quarter by the Cougars, shutting down the Ponies with zero points. Our defense took over with Carolina Vasquez leading with 6 steals, Bella Marvin and Brennan Ford both with 5. The player of the game goes to Brennan Ford and Avery Gonzales. The B team still remains undefeated with a 5-0 record. We are so proud of their work ethic and competitive spirit.

C TEAM

The C team had a game to remember this week. They had to make some adjustments as well playing against a zone defense for the first time. It was a slow start but finished in a victory winning by one point against the Ponies, 11-10. The Cougars were down by 4 in the first quarter, but tied up the score with buckets from Shreya Shah and Maddy Wilson, making it 4-4 at the half. Abigail Imwold scored in the third quarter and we shut down the opponent with a strong defensive game. Shreya Shah led with 6 rebounds along with Harper Thompson, 5 and Rin Kikuchi and Amy Chi contributing 4. The game was so intense in the 4th quarter, and this team was determined not to let this game slip away from them. The Ponies fought back, but Katelyn McCoppin brought us back in the game making a huge point at the freet hrow line after being fouled. The Ponies retaliated with another basket, leaving us with only 23 seconds left in the half, down by one point. We held possession of the ball, with the 3 missed shots but continued to get the offensive rebound. The last 2 seconds Rin Kikuchi put up the final shot and made it at the buzzer!! Player of the game goes to Rin Kikuchi and Abigail Imwold. What a game!!
