On Monday night, the start of the week also led to the start of CMS North's Boys Basketball season. And without delay, the action was energized by opening the season against their CISD rival... the Broncos of CMS East.
As the A teams took the court, and the stands began to fill, both teams were eager to get off to a strong start. And that's what happened as both the Cougars and the Broncos matched up pretty evenly throughout the first half. North was led by Eli Smith with 17 points; Damian Triggs with 11 points, a team high 8 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots; and a strong overall game from Mason Hotle tallying 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 5 assists! However, East was able to make a run and built a lead that North just couldn't overcome as they fell in the end 58-46.
And just like the first game, B team also wanted to get off to a hot start. Unfortunately, the Cougar's basket was securely locked and closed during the first period, and North quickly fell behind the Broncos. Marcos Ramos dropped in 6 points and 2 assists to lead the team in both categories while Paxton Deahl nabbed 5 rebounds as the Cougars tried to catch back up. But East proved just too strong on this night as the final scoreboard read 38-17 with the Broncos taking game 2 as well.
And to wrap up the night, North's C team was determined to avoid the same fate. And throughout the first half, North was definitely in control and steadily built up a lead over their rivals. However, basketball games are played in two halves, and the Broncos came out more aggressively in the second half and began to claw back at the Cougars. Despite being led in scoring by Arun Iyer and Austin Shelby (5 and 4 points respectively) along with Seth Campbell and Bryan Aguilera each adding 3 rebounds, the Cougars weren't able to stave off East's charge. And sadly, C team also fell in a thrilling finish with the score being 30-26 to finish off the East sweep on Opening Night.
