A Team::
On Thursday, we were ready to compete again after the long Christmas break and two snow days. We traveled to Colleyville to take on the Lady Colts. Both teams came out strong in the first quarter with the Cougars down by one point 5-6. The Colts were shooting well and gained a lot of momentum in the second quarter. The Cougars struggled offensively with shot attempts and rebounds. At the end of the half, the Colts lead 16-7. North made some changes after the half and were able to draw some fouls in the 3rd quarter, however, shots were not falling for the Cougars. This continued in the 4th quarter with a 11-22 loss. It was not the Cougars' night with a low scoring game, but they kept fighting until the very end. Our Player of the game was Izzy Lingenbrink leading offensively with 7 points. She stepped up throughout the game and was a leader on the court. Kate Kingsford played great defensively and had 6 steals. Jalina Suarez followed with 5 steals as well. Madie Shelby led with 4 rebounds. The Cougars are currently 2-2 for the season with two games to go. We play the Heritage Broncos at home on Thursday, January 23rd.
B Team: B team had a slow start and ended the first quarter 3-9. The Cougars struggled with communication and staying with their man. We pulled out of the press and focused on trying to stay on man and improve our help-side defense. The second quarter, the Colts only scored 2 points so the plan was a success, however, the Cougars were timid on offense and not shooting as much as our previous games. This was a low scoring match and our focus was off until the 4th quarter. We brought back the zone press and kept the Colts from scoring. Our shots were not falling and it was hard to get caught up in the final minutes of the game. (10-20) Finleigh Sanders contributed 3 points and helped tighten the margin in the 4 quarter. Gaby Keating had 2 rebounds and 6 streals. The Player of the Game goes to Ariana Datta. She led with 6 pts and 2 rebounds. Her stamina and hustle helped us gain momentum towards the end of the game. B team is 2-2 for the season.
C Team:
C team had a rough start against The Colts. They struggled on staying with their man and communication as well. We only scored 4 points in the first quarter and Colleyville led with 8. We tried to run a full court man press so that we would stick with our man and it worked! The Cougars shortened the margin to 13-14 at halftime. North only scored 2 points in the 3rd quarter giving the Colts an opportunity to take the lead again. In the 4th quarter, we struggled on offensive and defensive rebounds, allowing the Colts with more attempts to shoot multiple times. With 9 points in the 4th quarter and Cougars scoring only two, we fell short and it ended in their first loss of the season (15-28). Dany Pease led with 4 points and 4 steals, Brinley Robinson had 4 points and 2 rebounds. Parmis Farzad had 4 steals. Player of the Game was Ella Walther with 2 points, 1 rebound, 4 steals. A Team:
North traveled to Colleyville Middle School for just their second away game of the season. Despite battling illness and injuries leading up to tip-off, the team’s natural athleticism, combined with heart and hustle, propelled the A team to a 27-14 victory over the Colts.
Kate McGrath stood out, playing multiple roles and dominating on defense, while also contributing valuable assists. Seren Lovatt Bryan had her best defensive performance of the season, showcasing versatility as she moved between guard and post positions. Safirah Burgos made her minutes count by contributing 5 points on the board. Emmy Anene and Brylee Felix took charge defensively, alternating between defending Colleyville’s top player and neutralizing her offensive threat.
The game’s Player of the Game honors went to two players: Nadia Stanback, a post player who had her best game of the season, displaying impressive speed in transition and solid defensive play; and Annabelle Ross, also a post player, who led the team in scoring with 12 points and continued to dominate the paint with her rebounding, shooting, and defensive efforts.
With the win, the Cougars improve to a 2-2 record and have two games left before heading into the District Tournament on January 31 and February 1.
B Team:
“What a fun game!” stated the basketball coach from Colleyville Middle School, after a thrilling back-and-forth contest in which Coppell Middle School North prevailed 19-17.
The game started with some early nerves for the Cougars, as the Wolves came out firing, hitting quick buckets to take a six-point lead, 10-4. But the North girls responded with fierce full-court defense, making it nearly impossible for Colleyville to advance the ball. The Cougars allowed just one basket the rest of the half, sending the teams into the break with the score at 10-4.
Things picked up in the third quarter, where Sophia Petereit made her mark with three big baskets. Angelica Bennet added to the offense with a dazzling turnaround 3-pointer off the glass, while Brooke Webb chipped in with two smooth jump shots, contributing four points. North continued to control the game with strong defensive play—Natalie Campos was a standout, swiping the ball from the Wolves multiple times and setting up several fast-break opportunities. Valentina Sanchez also impressed with her quickness, making key recoveries and helping to spark the Cougar offense.
The Cougars outscored Colleyville 13-2 in the third quarter, turning the game in their favor.
In the fourth quarter, the strategy shifted to controlling the clock and holding onto the slim lead. With two minutes left, the Wolves were sent to the free-throw line. The first shot missed, but the second attempt went in, cutting North’s lead to 19-16. The Cougars knew they had to protect the ball and avoid fouls in the final moments. Webb, the game’s leading scorer with eight points, calmly hit another basket to extend the lead. With just 1.1 seconds remaining, Bennet secured the win by holding onto possession after a Wolves throw-in, sealing the 19-17 victory.
This was by far the best performance from the North B team. They effectively implemented several key game strategies and showed resilience and teamwork in securing the win.
C Team:
The C-team game was just as exciting as the B-team, with the girls playing with incredible heart and determination. Colleyville Middle School struck first, quickly taking the lead with an early basket and leaving the Cougars scoreless for the first few minutes.
In the second quarter, the Cougars found their rhythm as Victoria Motaa and Harper Johnson each scored their first baskets, putting the team on the board. By halftime, the score stood at 10-4 in favor of Colleyville.
In the third quarter, the Cougars turned up the intensity, with Sarah Morchower going on a scoring spree, contributing 6 points to help narrow the gap. Olivia Moore, Fatima Coria, and Peyton Dougher all played scrappy, tenacious defense, forcing the Wolves into several turnovers. The Cougars outplayed Colleyville 6-4 in the third quarter, making it a much tighter game.
The final quarter saw the Cougars fight for every possession. Charlotte Axelson, Anna Dinsmore, and Karis Wilkins were relentless, hustling for the ball and keeping the Wolves on their toes. The Cougars showed incredible resilience, but despite their effort, Colleyville held on for the win.
The players of the game were Harper Johnson, who made an impressive debut by scoring 2 points, and Sarah Morchower, who finished as the game’s top scorer with 8 points
